Videoblogging combines movies, sound, still images and text . This type of communication delivers richer content and offers the viewer an emotionally engaging online experience.
A Videoblog, or Vlog, is captured through a digital camera and created with video-editing software. The ideal length for a vlog is 1 - 3 minutes but kept under 6 minutes in length to keep the viewer's attention. The completed video is then uploaded to a web server as well as placed on an RSS feed to be shared with the videoblogging community. FireAnt and iTunes are examples of aggregators that will automate the downloading and the display of the videoblogs.
Vlogs use in education gives the learner an opportunity to express themselves through digital story telling and encourages participation in classroom projects. It’s a creative way to encourage active learning and building communication skills. Students can offer feedback on the presented video through the comment feature. With advances in technology the ease of creating videos and quickly posting them to a website makes videoblogs a useful tool in eduction. When creating videoblogs instructors must remember to respect the privacy of their students. When recording in a classroom setting, especially for minors, remember not show their faces and ask them to use screen names when adding comments instead of their real names to best conceal their identity.
In the educational environment it’s important to the learner that they feel the instructor is present. Researchers have stated that “…using digital videos for online instruction is a way for instructors to add a personal presence to their classes, which may help with building an online community for their courses.” (pg.11, http://etec.hawaii.edu/proceedings/2008/meeder2008.pdf) This medium also allows for the creation of user-generated content for deeper learning as well as opportunities for collaboration among students and between students and the instructor.
