Review: Copyright & Fair Use
Peggy,
I remember when I read the statement for the first time that "the primary objective of copyright is not to reward the labor of authors but to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts”, I was a bit surprised because I took it for granted that the purpose of copyright was to protect the benefits of the author or the owner of the intellectual property. When I think again, of course, this clarification of the purpose/goal of copyright makes very good sense. I'm glad you included this quote in your post.
I remember reading about copyright regarding mash-ups. I remember if by mashing several pieces of work together, the new piece sends an entirely new message or carries a different meaning or purpose from the original works, then it's considered new creative work, not infringement. But I am not sure how broad this can be applied safely. Each case of copyright situation needs to be examined separately.
Great post and great questions, Peggy. Thanks for the outstanding work you have done for this course!
