Social Bookmarking with Diigo
Personal Learning Environments (PLE) provides learners with their own spaces that are under their control to develop and share their ideas. For example, Diigo.com is a PLE that manages the collection of bookmarks as well as offering tools such as highlighting text, adding images, notes and comments.
Professional and Personal Learning Networks (PLN) are slightly different in their goals but they are both the same in regards to creating, sharing knowledge and learning. A Professional Learning Network is used to grow professionally and find best practices in your career. Your network may consist solely of colleagues in your field to exchange ideas. When building a Personal Learning Network you are creating and sharing knowledge that you build yourself for yourself about things that interest you. (Web 2.0: Personal Learning Networks (Aaron Smith - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK8kqjNomAg ) David Warlick states in his article “Grow your Personal Learning Network” that “PLN’s open up doors to sources of information that were not even available a few years ago, and continually evolving technologies are making it easier to capture and tame the resulting information overload. (Pg.13)” One valuable resource in planning your PLN is RSS aggregators because they deliver information directly to you. Another useful tool is social bookmarking. “As people add new websites to their online bookmarks and categorize or tag them, that information becomes available to the entire community.( David Warlick Pg.14)” In the Educause Learning Initiative article, “7 things you should know about…Social Bookmarking” it states there are some downsides to bookmarking. “By definition, social bookmarking is done by amateurs.” People may not include all possible tags associated with the website which can lead to a poor use of the tagging system. Another disadvantage is there may be a risk of a user adding their personal bias toward a subject matter. We are life-long learners and the PLN create a complete circle of communication. It is not just a destination for information but a place to contribute and add valued to existing ideas. _______________________________________________ Graphic by Langwitches 21st Century Skills - Social Bookmarking It's not about the Tools, it's about the Skills https://www.flickr.com/photos/langwitches/5285524738/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ |
