About Me
The EDUCA2720 - Course Design class will be my third online class towards completing the TOUT program for my online teaching certificate. I’ve completed EDUCA2700-Best Practices in Online Education and EDUCA2760-Social Media and Collaboration Tools during the Fall 2014 semester. I’ve also registered for the EDUCA2740-Mulltimedia/Online Teaching course that will begin next month.
I’ve taught traditional college level technical classes but not an online class. The major difference between online learning/teaching and classroom teaching/learning is that learning happens face-to-face in a classroom setting and is held at the same place at the same time. An online classroom is asynchronous, meaning that learning and instruction happens anytime and anyplace by electronic means.
There were two instructors I had in college that made learning fun. I really never enjoyed history but my college history instructor had us study the history of WWI and WWII through to the present by reflecting on our own personal heritage or an issue that was important to us and it’s impact on the world at large. We shared our findings with the group that gave us direct feedback. Also, my technical programming instructor was very demanding but she was well organized and made coding fun.
There are several characteristics I believe are important for an online instructor. The online instructor needs to be detailed oriented and have organizational skills as well as written communication skills. They should have a learner-centered approach to their instruction and offer a variety of materials to engage all learning styles. They must be willing to give the time commitment necessary to devote to creating a positive learning environment and to give constructive feedback regularly.
