The personalization principle states that using a conversational tone and polite speech in a multimedia presentation help the learner better connect with the content. Using animated characters can help focus a learner’s attention and maintain their motivation.
This principle was applied when I created a Voki animated character to introduce the goals and objects of a presentation created using the PowToon application. The image above shows these two characters. The PowToon movie described the ARCS model of motivational design and uses another basic animated character. The simple black and white background of the video did not distract from the learning material presented. Highlighting certain words in yellow emphasized the important text.
The Voki character is speaking in a conversational style to grab the learner’s attention. She is speaking in a friendly tone and uses polite, indirect wording, as well as speaking in the first or second person rather than third person. Using words such as, we and you.
Using animated characters to deliver learning materials can be beneficial in an online learning environment. These characters can be used as an expert instructor that guides the learner and gives them a sense of the instructor’s presence. Learners will be motivated when they can identify with and relate to characters that are socially interacting with other characters. Animated characters can also be used to give feedback to a learner’s actions while engaging in interactive learning materials.
