There are a few safeguards to remember when using online video chats or when engaging in social media. I’ve successfully used Google+ Hangouts to video chat with other students in my courses. I found this type of communication works quite well especially when collaborating with classmates on a project using Google Docs. We discussed the document and made changes on the fly in real time.
When using video chats it’s best to create circles to keep your communication under control for security purposes by limiting conversations to the group. Using Skype in the classroom will benefit younger students, also. They can collaborate with others in the class or speak with a guest speaker for a real world learning experience.
When setting up a social media account remember to set your privacy settings and avoid adding too much personal information. One important rule to follow when your online is not to do or say anything that you wouldn’t do or say in real life.
