The use of Multimedia in the classroom creates a powerful way to present teaching materials that will help the learners construct and then communicate knowledge. Multimedia means any presentation that uses multiple methods to communicate the same information. These methods include text, images, audio and motion media, such as, animation, film and video. Using these methods will make the lesson come alive as well as accommodate different learning styles.
The human brain processes visual and audio input separately and creates a more comprehensive learning experience. “Cognitive learning theory explains how mental processes transform information received by the eyes and ears into knowledge and skills in human memory.” (E-Learning and the Science of Instruction, p.39)
Using multimedia in an online course allows students to actively engage in their own learning. They set their own pace as well as have the ability to review materials to build knowledge. Whether images, audio or motion media is used, it’s important to use the technology purposefully.
Managing the NWSA website course is designed for adult sailing club members. Incorporated into the course are instructional videos and PowerPoint presentations to help the learner actively engage in learning. They will build on that knowledge by creating new content. Students are given a weekly blog assignment where they can be creative and use images or videos to enhance and express their ideas presented in their blog entry.
The above image was selected because it represents the entire head and the areas of the brain that are affected when interacting with multimedia presentations.
